Mr. Carl Benton ("Big Ben") Atkins, age 69 of Huntsville, AL and formerly of Vernon, passed away Monday, May 13, 2013, at Huntsville Hospital.
Mr. Atkins was born September 23, 1943, in Lamar Co., AL, to the late Carl and Ada Atkins and was also preceded in death by his three sisters, Faye Cooper, Dorothy Sue Johnson, and Mary Leaf, and brother-in-law, John Leaf. He was the lead singer of the Class of 65 band and performed at various events.
Funeral services will be Saturday at 2:00 at the Vernon City Complex Auditorium with Jeff Harvill and Marty Gamblin officiating. Burial will follow at Furnace Hill. Visitation will be Saturday at the City Complex 11-2 prior to the service.
Survivors include two sons, Chris (Nicole) Atkins of Greenville, AL and Jason (Kellye) Atkins of Shelbyville, TN; two daughters, Patty Jo Holt of Fayetteville, TN and Coby Carson of Shelbyville, TN; his girlfriend, Linda Betowt Bennett of Huntsville, AL; two brothers, Henry L. "Jet" Atkins of Meridianville, AL and William "Buddy" (Debbie) Atkins of Warner Robins, GA; sister-in-law, Sue O. Atkins of Millport, AL; two brothers-in-law, Dallas Cooper of Vernon, AL and Paul Johnson of Vernon, AL; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
