Betty Ruth Falkner Brock, loving daughter, wife, mother, and friend passed away to be with the Lord on April 10, 2013.
Mrs. Brock was on October 24, 1925 to Dewey Falkner and Edna Turner Falkner. They lived in the old family home where her father and grandparents lived. Her maternal grandparents were Dr. Berry Edley Turner and Ella Glasgow Turner. Her paternal grandparents were Wiley Polk Falkner and Alabama Jane Hayes Falkner. "Pa Falkner" bought this land and built a log cabin on it in 1874 when he and "Ma" married.
Mrs. Brock graduated from Lamar County High School in 1943 and was valedictorian of her class. She went on that summer to what was then Florence State Teachers College in Florence, AL. She went summer and winter, graduating with a B.S. degree in education in the summer of 1946. That fall she came back to Vernon and began a 31 year teaching career at Vernon Elementary School.
In 1949 she married Berneal Brock and they had one son, Douglas Brock. Both are now deceased. Berneal died in March 1979 and Douglas died in February 2002.
After she retired from teaching, Mrs. Brock worked at Butler & Co. part time for a number of years. She also worked at the Lamar Co. Hospital in Vernon as a volunteer for a number of years, and at First United Methodist Church as secretary for many years.
Mrs. Brock enjoyed her club work. She was a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, joining on her great-great-grandfather's Confederate record, that of Jesse Jones Wheeler. She has supplementary papers on another great-great-grandfather, Wilson Archibald Glasgow. Mrs. Brock was also a member Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary teachers' organization, the Retired Teachers Association, and the Wesley Circle of the Methodist Church. In these organizations, she served in many offices. Mrs. Brock held the office of Sunday School Superintendent at her church and was on the Church Council serving as secretary for a number of years.
Mrs. Brock was known for her generous heart and her ability to make one feel welcomed when in her presence. She was loved by so many and will be missed by all.
Mrs. Brock's memorial service will be held at Vernon First United Methodist Church on April 24 at 2:00 with Patrick Gunn officiating. A fellowship will follow in the church fellowship hall. Visitation will be 12-2 prior to the service.
