Carolyn Reeves

January 13, 1934 — January 11, 2026

Vernon, AL

Carolyn Finch Reeves was born to Jefferson Cameron and Rama Boman Finch on January 13, 1934, and died January 11, 2026, two days short of her 92nd birthday.

She had two brothers, Roland Ray Finch and Jefferson Ross Finch.  Her parents and brothers preceded her in death.

Carolyn grew up in the Mt. Pisgah community, not far from Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church.

Carolyn joined Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church at a summer revival when she was twelve years old.  She loved her church and taught the Young People’s class for several years. She also served as church treasurer and church clerk for many years.  As long as she was able, she planted flowers in front of the church and played the keyboard for the song leaders.

Carolyn graduated from Lamar County High School in May 1951.  She then went to Birmingham to live with her uncle, Grady, and aunt, Gertrude Finch, during the week so she could attend Alabama Draughon Business College from June through December 1951.

After completing business school, she worked in Birmingham until she began work in Vernon at the USDA GMA office on April 15, 1952.  She retired from that position after more than 30 years of service.

Carolyn married Howard Lewis Reeves on September 6, 1952.  They were blessed with the birth of their daughter, Renee, on March 3, 1966.

After retiring from USDA, Carolyn worked part-time for Howard at The Lamar Democrat office.  Among the many things she did there, she contacted the schools early each week to gather news for the “Around Vernon” column.  She also did proofreading and labeling.  She rode with Howard throughout the county each week as they delivered newspapers.

After Howard’s death in 2014, Carolyn assumed the role of publisher.

Carolyn was a charter member of the Young Matrons Club and attended as long as she was able.

Throughout her life, Carolyn had a soft heart for all animals.  She always seemed to have room for one more animal, and she was seldom without a pet.

She was also known as a wonderful cook, and friends and family still remembered her caramel pies, which were often requested, as well as her fried chicken.  She was an avid reader, an Alabama football fan and loved watching westerns TV shows like Gunsmoke.

Carolyn endured severe arthritis throughout her body for many years, yet she continued to do for others as long as she was able.

Carolyn and Howard were avid supporters of the Backstreet Opry in Vernon.  Performances featuring a variety of music, including gospel and bluegrass, were held on Saturday nights.  Carolyn made recordings of the music to keep for herself and to share with anyone who wanted a copy.

In her final days, Carolyn was able to remain at home under the care of hospice and her daughter.

Carolyn’s favorite passage of Scripture was Ecclesiastes chapter 3.  It is a comfort to friends and family to know that she is now at home with Jesus and reunited with her loved ones.

Carolyn lived a life marked by faithfulness, hard work, and devotion to family, church, and community.

Funeral services were held privately in accordance with Carolyn’s wishes.  Carolyn was laid to rest on her birthday, January 13, 2026, under the direction of Chandler Funeral Home at Mt. Pisgah Cemetery.
