Mr. Charles L. Cook, age 83, of Vernon, AL, passed away Wednesday, June 21, 2023, at his residence.
Mr. Cook was born August 16, 1939, in Vernon, AL, to the late L.C. and Mary Ludean Cribbs Cook. He graduated from Lamar County High School in 1958 and later earned his degree in pharmacy from Samford University. Mr. Cook owned and operated Cook's Pharmacy from 1965-1990, then co-owned Hospital Pharmacy from 1993-2010. He was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Vernon where he led the music for several years. In addition to his parents, Mr. Cook was preceded in death by his daughter, Carrie Denise Cook, and his sister, Janette Berman.
Mr. Cook belonged to numerous organizations. He was a member of the Lions Club and was "Man of the Year" in 1989. He served on the Board of Directors at the Bank of Vernon for over 40 years, and was the administrator of the Lamar County Health Trust Fund until 2021. He also served on the Lamar County Board of Education for many years and was recently on the Board of Directors for the West Alabama Hospice.
Funeral services will be Saturday, June 24, at 3:00 PM, at the First Baptist Church of Vernon, with Bro. Brandon Phillips and Bro. Clyde Stevens officiating. Burial will follow at Lamar Memory Gardens. Visitation will be 1:00-3:00 at the church prior to the service.
Pallbearers will be Phillip Glasgow, Ed Gosa, James Lacy, Jack Moody, Patrick Pennington, and Tony Taylor. Honorary pallbearers will be the Lamar County High School Class of 1958; and friends, Wayne Baines, Terrell Guthrie, Terry Gosa, and Glen Taylor.
Survivors include his son, Christopher Charles Cook, of Vernon, AL; his two sisters, Carol Clark (Roy) of Water Valley, MS and Suzanne Murphy of Dayton, OH; his two nieces, Louisa Berman, her husband Tristan Plaisance, and their two children of Atlanta, GA, and Paula Berman Newman (Dan) and their three children oh Huntsville, AL; and a host of cousins and extended family. The family would like to extend a special thank you to his special friend, Jackie Boozer of Pensacola, FL, for her loving care during this past year.
