Mrs. Dorothy Jean Atkins Cole,
age 86 of Vernon, AL, passed away Thursday, December 6, 2012, at Fayette Long Term Care.

Mrs. Cole was born January 21, 1926, in Lamar Co., AL to the late Marcus Jefferson and Altha Marie Atkins. She was the Fayette/Lamar Community Service Coordinator for the State of Alabama for thirty years. Mrs. Cole was a member of the First United Methodist Church and Eastern Star. She enjoyed reading, quilting, crafts, and crochetting. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore Cole; her brother, Marcus Jefferson Atkins, Jr.; and two sisters, Fannie Raye Rickman and Elizabeth Atkins Atwood.

Funeral services will be Sunday at 3:00 in the funeral home chapel with Patrick Gunn officiating. Burial will follow Vernon City Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday 2-3 prior to the service.

Survivors include her son, Mike (Pam) Cole of Vernon, AL; daughter, Sandra (Bill) Powell of Huntsville, AL; four grandchildren, Bill Powell, II of Atlanta, GA, Jon (Angie) Powell of Huntsville, AL, Dawn (Tim) Browning of Gordo, AL, and Dana (Holt) Pittman of Helena, AR; sister-in-law, Helen Dowdle Atkins; eight great-grandchildren, and two cousins, Mary Frances Bowling and Ruth Frances Barnett.
