IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Dorothy
Mcgee
October 17, 1936 – April 19, 2025
Dorothy Ann McGee, age 88, of Vernon, AL passed away peacefully in her sleep on Saturday, April 19, 2025 at Woodland Nursing Home in Cullman, AL.
Dorothy was born October 17, 1936, to the late James Preston and Zella Ozelle White. She was the youngest daughter in a family of 12 children, 10 of which survived until old age. She was the last surviving child and took great pride in being here until she was "almost 90" but also longed to be with her family and her Savior. She married Lawrence "Jim" McGee in 1973 and they moved away from the Vernon area for many years as he worked all across the country. In their retirement years, they returned home to Vernon to live out their final years. They shared a mutual love of travel and spent much time throughout their lives pulling an RV across the country and making wherever they landed feel like home. Dorothy loved to sew and make clothes for her and Lawrence, as well as friends and family. Dorothy also had a love of music and came from a musical family. She learned to play guitar at a young age and continued up until she was no longer able. She was raised singing in church but had never sung in front of a crowd until she discovered her love of performing with her family, after she returned back home to Lamar County. Many Friday and Saturday nights she and her brother and sisters could be found on the stage at the Backstreet Opry here in Vernon. They would gather at one of the siblings home during the week to rehearse so that they always were able to put on a good show. This love of music was shared with all of her family and every "White Family Reunion" ended with a good old country singing…and boy could they draw a crowd!
Dorothy is proceeded in death by her beloved husband Lawrence McGee, as well as her six brothers: Hollis (Bessie) White, James (Lillian) White, Ernest White, Larry (Marie) White, Rex (Laura) White, and Edward White; and three sisters Opal (Howard) Hopper, Lois (Herschel) Gallop and Wylodine (Miles) Prater.
Funeral services will be Tuesday April 22, 2025 at 1:00 in the chapel at Chandler Funeral Home, with Tony Gallop officiating. Burial will follow at Walnut Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be 12:00-1:00 prior to the service.
Pallbearers will be her nephews: Lynn White, Jeremy White, Jay Gallop, Christopher Holloway, Jonathan Steadman and Levi Steadman.
Survivors include her son, Roger (Rashida) McGee; her grandchildren Jr, April and Christina; sisters-in-love Winnie Chloe White and Alice White; and a host of nieces and nephews who she thought of as her own children, all of which will greatly miss her.
The family would like to offer a heartfelt thank you to the staff of Woodland Nursing Home in Cullman, AL- especially Mary Briscoe- for loving Dorothy like she was family. Also a special thank you to Aveanna Hospice and Tracy Tankersley for your special care over the last few months.
