Mr. Jesse Oren Phillips, age 81 of Vernon, AL, passed away Friday, evening, November 25, 2016, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo.
Jesse was born April 11, 1935, in Deatsville, AL, to the late Leon and Ruth Phillips. He graduated from Alabama Christian College with a BA in Bible in 1957 and obtained an MA in Bible from Alabama Christian School of Religion in 1978. Jesse preached for local churches of Christ in Alabama and Tennessee for more than 50 years. He and his family spent two years as missionaries to Cameroon, West Africa, during 1969-1971. Upon returning to the U.S. in 1971, the family began work with Christian Chapel Church of Christ where he preached until health problems necessitated his retirement from full-time preaching in 2009. Jesse was also a rural mail carrier out of the Vernon Post Office for twenty years, retiring in 2001. Jesse enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, preaching, and reading and studying the Bible. It was also obvious to any who knew Jesse that he had a passion for gardening.
