Mr. John Wesley Taggart, age 92, of Vernon, AL, passed away Saturday, February 26, 2022, at his residence.

Mr. Taggart was born April 15, 1929, in Vernon, AL, to the late Benjamin G. and Etma V. Taggart.  The story has it that his mother fell out of the barn loft the day he and his twin Merry were born, but Merry did not survive.  The family used to joke about IRS Day in the Depression year.  Mr. Taggart never made much over minimum wage, but he could pinch the fleas off the buffalo nickel.  The "Old Place", as Mr. Taggart called it, as on Snake Branch Road, and is now owned by Weyerhaeuser.  Mr. Taggart build 78 homes around the county plus a few away during the late 1960s and 70s.  He then went "inside" to work at OMNI until he retired.  Mr. Taggart also raised cattle, swine, a little corn, and hay.  Few might remember this BBQ from the old store.  He married his wife, Ramona Ann Sims Taggart, when she was 16 and he was 22, and was fresh back from the Korean War.

Mr. Taggart is preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin Gurley and Etma V. Smith Taggart; his wife, Ramona Ann Sims Taggart; his grandson, William Wesley Hollis; two brothers, William Paul Taggart and Edgar JB Taggart; and one sister, Scharleen Taggart Guin.

Funeral services will be Thursday, March 3, at 2:00 PM, in the chapel of Chandler Funeral Home, with Dalton Eason officiating.  Burial will follow at Furnace Hill.  Visitation will be Wednesday evening, 6:00-8:00 PM.

Active pallbearers will be David Gunnells, Kevin Gunnells, Alex Christian, Matt Christian, Chase Christian, and Tyler Stockman.  Honorary pallbearers will be James Gunnells and Bob Hudson.

Mr. Taggart is survived by his daughter, Donna Gail Taggart; his one James "Jimmy" Daniel Taggart; two grandsons, Dallas Clay (Jennifer Howard) Hollis; three great-grandchildren, Savannah Emylyn Hollis, Madison Grace Hollis, and Mason Hayes; one brother, Bryan Robert Taggart; three nephews, Don Taggart, Scott Taggart, and Tim Taggart; and one niece Bobbie Taggart Scholfield.
