Judy Chism

Mrs. Judy Marie Chism, age 80, of Vernon, AL, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Columbus, MS.

Judy was born September 9, 1946, to the late Merdell and Doris Lawrence of Vernon, AL.  She was a 1964 graduate of Lamar County High School then later received her BS in education.  Judy taught school for over 31 years with most of that time being in Lamar County.  Her ability to connect with others, whether in the class room, at church, or in the community left a meaningful impact on the lives of many.  Judy was a faithful member of Bethel Church of Christ.  She loved antique shopping, blueberry picking, glassware collecting, and most of all going to academic and sporting events to support her children and grandchildren.  As she once said "you raise your kids so that you may spoil your grandkids" and she did just that.  The greatest measure of her life was found in the way she loved her family and the way she showed up for the people she cared about.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, September 30, at 2:00 PM, at the Bethel Church of Christ, with Jimmy McNees officiating.  Burial will follow in the adjoining cemetery.  Visitation will be 1:00-2:00 at the church prior to the service.

Pallbearers will be Noah Chism, Will Allen Chism, Daniel Chism, Jacob Chism, Wesley Chism, and Tommy Chism.

Judy is survived by her husband of 62 years, Glen Chism, and two sons, Wesley (Sonia) Chism of Winfield, AL and Tommy (Rachel) Chism of Vernon, AL.  She is also survived by her brother, Loyt Lawrence; sister-in-law, Shirley Chism; her grandchildren, Daniel (Devon) Chism, Kaylee (Ethan) Carr, Jacob Chism, Noah Chism, Will Allen Chism, and Luke Chism; one great-granddaughter, Reagan Chism; and a host of cousins, nieces, and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made in Judy's memory to Lighthouse 5:14, 1505 Crossley Road, Vernon, AL 35592.
