Ms. Laverne McKay, age 92, of Vernon, AL, passed away Wednesday, May 28, 2025, at Fayette Long Term Care.

Laverne was born April 6, 1933, to the late Robert and Mammie (Finch) Smith.  Her parents both died at an early age and Laverne had to help raise her small brothers and sisters.  Laverne worked at McCoy Manufacturing most of her life until she got laid off and went to work at the nursing home in Vernon as a nurse's aide.  Laverne always loved being with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and would ask about her great-grandchildren all the time.  She also enjoyed knitting, sewing, crocheting, and reading her Bible everyday until she got to where she could not see to read.  In addition to her parents, Laverne was also preceded in death by her brothers, Cecil Smith, Grover Smith, and Bob Smith, and her sisters, Lena Gray McKay and Virginia Godsey.

Funeral services will be Thursday, May 29, at 5:00 PM, in the chapel of Chandler Funeral Home, with David Long, James Godsey, and Will Stoker officiating.  Burial will follow at Lamar Memory Gardens.  Visitation will be 4:00-5:00 prior to the service.

Pallbearers will be Preston Robinson, Chad Robinson, Race McLemore, Donald McKay, Dennis McKay, Les Wright, Elizabeth Stoker, Emma Beth Robinson, and Baz McLemore, Brenton McKay, Kyle McKay, and John Guyton.

Laverne is survived by her three children, Charles (Brenda) McKay, Mary McKay, and Randall (Marcellia) McKay; six grandchildren, Chasdity Stoker, DeShana McLemore, Crystal Robinson, Kyle McKay, Brenton McKay, and Jessica Smith; and 14 great-grandchildren.
