Mattie R. Woods, age 91, of rural Sulligent, Alabama, passed away Friday afternoon, February 19, 2021, at home surrounded by love ones.

Mattie was born on June 17, 1929 in Sumiton, Alabama, to the late James R. and Mary C. Russell.  She attended school in Dora, Alabama.  She later moved to Sulligent around 1954.  Mattie was always a hardworking woman and dedicated mother to her children.  Prior to major health problems, some of the things she enjoyed doing was word-search puzzles, cooking, and raking leaves in the yard.  She affirmed her faith in Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior on the evening of July 21, 2014, and became a member of New Jerusalem Church of God in Christ under the pastorage of Supt. Murry R. Johnson.

Private funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 24, 2021, at 11:00 AM, at the chapel of Chandler Funeral Home, with Supt. Murry R. Johnson officiating.  There will be no visitation services.  Burial will be at the New Church cemetery. Pallbearers will be her sons.

Mattie is survived by eight sons, Patrick H. (Fortune) Woods, Rector (Margaret) Johnson Jr., Bob Joe (Sally Mae) Johnson, Jerry (Debra Shelly) Johnson, Jimmy (Mary Etta) Johnson, Terry (Miranda) Johnson, Esker Jay Johnson, and Troy L. Johnson; three daughters, Dorothy L. Smith, Lula Karon Thomas (Rev. David) Smith, and Rammie M. Johnson; one sister, Charlotte Wilson; her brother-in-law, Othello Giles, Sr.; three generations of numerous grandchildren; and her nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Mattie is preceded in death by her parents, James and Mary Russell; the fathers of her children, Manual Woods and Rector Johnson, Sr.; one son, James Woods; four brothers and three sisters; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations made to any youth and/or women's ministry.
