Mr. Roy Porter, age 93 of Millport, AL, passed away Wednesday, April 6, 2016, at Hospice of West Alabama in Tuscaloosa.
Mr. Porter was born June 10, 1922, in Pittsburgh, PA, to the late Robert and Phoebe Porter. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps. in 1940-1941. He then served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II as a gunner on the B-29 Battlin' Bonnie, 99th Bomb Group. Mr. Porter was stationed in the Pacific, based on the island of Tinian, and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. Mr. Porter worked at the E.L. Wiegand Company, later Emerson Electric Company, in Pittsburgh following WW II and came to Alabama in 1983 as a supervisor with Emerson. On retiring from Emerson, Mr. Porter worked at Shop 'N Save in Vernon.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Porter was preceded in death by his first wife, Frances (McQueen) and his daughter, Joanne Porter.
There will be a memorial service Saturday, March 16, at 11:00, at Shiloh United Methodist Church in the Hightogy Community.
Survivors include his wife, Inez Porter of Millport, AL; two daughters, Carol McQueen of Greenville, PA and Sharon (Michael) Porter Pink of Chicago, IL; 18 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and three step-daughters, Judy Davis of West Point, MS, Linda Humbherg of Alger, AL, and Lisa Brasher of Smithville, MS.
The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Hospice of West Alabama, 3851 Loop Road, Tuscaloosa, AL 35404.
