Obituary

Sarah Loraine Springfield McGill, age 89 of Vernon, AL (Bedford Community) passed away Tuesday, March 13, 2012 in Winchester, TN after a battle with cancer.

Mrs. McGill was born November 26, 1922 in Pickens Co., AL on the Springfield farm home located north of Gordo, AL. She was one of eleven children born to Thomas Alden Springfield and Sarah Jane Koon. She attended Fairview School through the sixth grade and graduated from Gordo High School in 1942 where she was a member of the girls' basketball team. Mrs. McGill attended First Baptist Church in Vernon, AL. She was an active member of the UDC, worked with the Lamar Co. Health Council organizing and sponsoring annual health fairs for the community, and was on the Board of Directors for the Bank of Sulligent/AmSouth for 17 years. She enjoyed extensive travel and was an artist reconized for her oil paintings. She served as maintenance superintendent for the New Hope Cemetery until 2012. She was proud to be from "The Greatest Generation" described by Tom Brokaw. She was a farmer's wife who was actively involved in the work of raising cotton, corn, Herford beef cattle, and running McGill Cotton Gin on Aberdeen Road.

Mrs. McGill was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil Eugene (Bob) McGill, son of Addie Lee McGill and Anna Bell Cribbs of Bedford Community, Sulligent, AL; four brothers, Willie Thomas Springfield, Walter Emmett Springfield, Tillman Riley Springfield, Garnett Eugene Springfield; three sisters, Wilma Ruth Springfield Wheat, Rona Lucille Springfield Bohannon, and Ibera Springfield; and her half sister, Susie Mae Springfield Latham.

Funeral services will be Friday, March 16, at 1:00 in the funeral home chapel with burial to follow at New Hope Methodist Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday evening 6-8.

Survivors include two sons, Thomas Franklin (Helen) McGill of Winchester, TN and Ronald Eugene (Annell) McGill of Scottsboro, AL; three grandchildren, Delanna (Troy) Rhoton of Winchester, TN, Brant (Emily) McGill of Decherd, TN, and Thomas (Stephanie) McGill of Clinton, MS; four great-grandchildren, Riley Rhoton, Reagan Rhoton, Owen McGill, and Annabelle McGill; two brothers, Gilbert Woods Springfield of Mobile, AL and Earnes Alden Springfield of Thomasville, AL; and one sister, Kathleen Springfield Brown of Gordo, AL.
