Our Beginnings
The roots of Chandler Funeral Home go back to 1938 with the establishment of Falkner Funeral Home. At that time, Mr. Ed Falkner had the only funeral home servicing north and central Lamar County and east Monroe and Lowndes County, MS. The original business was located on "Back Street" in Vernon. Mr. Berneal Brock then purchased the funeral home in the early 60s, changing the name to Brock/Brown Service Funeral Home and moving the facility to North Pond Street in Vernon. In 1972 Mr. Bob Sullivan purchased the business from Mr. Brock, and the name changed again, then to Sullivan Funeral Home. In 1984 (after having worked as an embalmer and funeral director for Mr. Brock and Mr. Sullivan), Allen Chandler purchased the business from Mr. Sullivan. Three years later, in 1988, Mr. Chandler built a 10,000 sq. ft. facility at the end of the four-lane on Hwy 18 West.
In September of 1988, an open house was held for the new funeral home. The new facility features a spacious chapel, four viewing rooms, a large selection room, a dorm and kitchen area, three offices, and approximately 120 parking spaces. Employees include Kaye Lyn Slone (since 1984), Jason Burks (since 1994), Ginny Chandler (since 2000), and Curtis Heatherly (since 2013). The goal of Chandler Funeral Home and its employees is exemplary, caring service at a fair price, at one of the most difficult times in any family's life. In keeping with the Chandler Funeral Home spirit of offering only the finest in dedicated, highly personal service for their clients, its employees are actively involved in community service, civic organizations, and various churches. The company is a member of the Vernon Chamber of Commerce, the National Funeral Directors Association, and the Alabama Funeral Directors Association. Chandler Funeral Home provides personal, professional service that began over 70 years ago, now in a modern facility.
